Dr Samantha May
Sports and Exercise Medicine Registrar

Dr Samantha May

Dr Samantha May is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Registrar who is undertaking specialist training in the management of sports injuries and illnesses, as well as the development of specific exercise programs tailored to each individual’s personal needs and limitations.

She has a passion for treating all musculoskeletal injuries, whether it be recreational, elite or work related.

Joining the Bounce team in 2021, Samantha completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery and Advanced Medical Science at The University of Melbourne in 2013.

She completed a Diploma of Sports Medicine through the International Olympic Committee in 2016, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Management of Pain by online distance learning through The University of Edinburgh in 2015.

She is currently completing a Masters of Applied Science (Research) through La Trobe University Graduate Research School and undertaking her fourth year of training on the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Medicine program.

Samantha has plenty of experience looking after elite athletes. She is the Melbourne Vixens Team Doctor and supported the team to the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball Premiership. She previously worked for the Western Bulldogs Women’s AFL for their first two successful years, and also toured with Cricket Australia Women’s A squad to the UK in 2019. She volunteered as a doctor during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 and managed elite international athletes in track and field events. She can apply these principles to the management of all patients, whether they are recreational athletes, manual workers, or those with chronic diseases simply wanting to safely increase their activity levels.

As part of the clinical services in this practice, Samantha is trained to make the appropriate diagnosis, and just as importantly, detect the causes or risk factors that lead to the development of the condition, to minimise the risk of recurrence. She can arrange all the appropriate investigations from x-rays to blood tests, ECG’s to complex imaging, including MRI scans. Once the diagnosis is made, she will advise on treatment and arrange for the appropriate referrals. This may involve giving advice on the appropriate rehabilitation program, the prescription of medications, or arranging interventions such as injections. Where further specialist allied health and other medical specialist advice is warranted, she can arrange rapid referral to the appropriate practitioners.
